A Bit Motivated about Goals

As I was thinking about the goals that I worked on and then posted it kind of motivated and inspired me to do something productive. For some reason I just couldn’t get them off my mind. So I did something about it and already accomplished one of my short term goals.

  • I signed up and registered for my first 5K race to be run on January 9th, 2010.

“Dear Rob,

Congratulations! You are now registered for the Running from an Angel Marathon, ½, 10K, 5K and 50 mile run

Please check the event’s official website for updates: Calico Racing

I decided to wait till then to run so that I could lose some more weight therefore causing less stress on my knees. Since most of you know that I do suffer from issues in that department. Plus the weather that time of year is perfect for running.  I could have done one in August but who really wants to run when it’s 115° outside. I just felt that this time would be the best for me. It gives me time to lose the weight, prepare and build up my intensity so I can do a good run that I can be proud of.

Now lets see what other goal I can accomplish next :-)

  • Hey rob, what are you doing to for injury prevention for your knees? Do you use the foam roller at least 3 times a week? Have you considered using a massage therapist? Do you stretch very often? Are you icing your knees at all? Please advise, thx.

    • Hey Paul…
      Appreciate your input on this.
Not totally thrilled yet about this 5K race. Not sure if it’s the right choice. As you know I do have arthritis in my left knee and I didn’t think that there was much I could do for an injury that really is already there and can’t be corrected. First, don’t know how to effectively use a foam roller on the knee and am afraid more harm could be done then good. Second… As much as I’d love a massage therapist and it is a good option, it’s not in my budget at this time. Third, I do stretch every time I exercise but don’t know if there is anything knee specific. Fourth, I haven’t tried icing the knee. So hope that answers your questions here. I one thing I did learn through your comment is that I still have a lot to learn about injury prevention. Still not convinced whether there is anything that can be done about my arthritis, but willing to try out options. Also wasn’t sure if there is anything I should do to prepare myself more for a 5K run. As you know I am not a runner, yet! If I am to do this I want to do my best and want to be prepared. A 5K might not seem like a lot for you or other people that have been running, but for me this is a big deal. It’s something that I haven’t tried before and have never been physically able to do either. Times are changing though.
      Thanks for your input man!

  • Good for you for signing up! That gives you plenty of time to prepare without risking injury… This year is just flying by!

    • I am happy about it and for me this was a BIG step. This year is really flying by fast, isn’t it?

  • It is so good you’ve given yourself such a great kick in the arse :) . You will have plenty of time to train for 5k — keep your eye on the training. And, enjoy the week. We are actually suppose to have sunshine this week!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    • I needed that good kick in the Arse to get me motivated and off my arse :-) It does give me plenty of time to train ands get to the point were I am hopefully injury free. I’ll have to talk to paul and Chris to see if there is any specific thing I need to do to train for this. I know a 5K is not a long distance for some, but for me it is and I want to be fully prepared. Hope you had plenty of sunshine there today in PEI and even if you didn’t I know that your smile brightened up everyones lifes there. :-) .

  • Woot! One off the list. Congratulations. Now it is on to the next one. BTW, I cannot imagine running when it is summer in Vegas. I would have to do that in January. :-)

    • Yep. One down and many to still work on :-) They’ll get done though. I am in no race yet to finish them all at once . That’s why I picked January to run. It’s just to damn HOT here vfor me to even attempt something like that. I know I might be crazy, but not that’s way to Crazy :-)
